I so appreciate columnist William Marvel. His reporting continues to expose the waste and incompetence in public education. Virtually every week he finds another example of how this bloated bureaucracy wastes our money but, more importantly, how it fails in its mission to educate our kids.
I have to laugh. Yes, by all means, let's have a bunch of people that don't have any training, or even a college education themselves, "teaching" their kids. While there are very specific situations I support home schooling, most people are completely unqualified to do so, and I pity the children of people like Mark, having people like him as their "teachers" would limit the scope of their knowledge and ability to think critically dramatically.
Homeschoolers generally outperform public school students on standardized tests, scoring 15-30 percentile points higher on average, and tend to have higher ACT and SAT scores and college GPAs. This difference is consistent across different socioeconomic backgrounds. Homeschooled students also tend to show stronger skills in areas like self-motivation and critical thinking.
Homeschoolers also perform better on the SAT and ACT. The average SAT score for homeschooled students is often higher, and they tend to score above the national average on the ACT.
It is past time to realize that the current public school model has outlived its effectiveness or ability to educate the general population of our country's children.
Besides being incapable of maintaining itself physically or financially under the present paradigm, it has turned into a government jobs program. They forward exploding budgets with top-heavy administrative costs under the guise of "If you care about your children, you'll vote for bigger budgets," which only perpetuates their own existence. Just examine the dollar/student ratios over the last 30 years.
It's time to reimagine compulsory public education.
